“Expecting life to treat you well because you’re a good person is like expecting an angry bull not to charge because you’re a vegetarian.” by Shari R. Barr
In a perfect world, everything would be fair. People who are good and work hard will be rewarded while those who do bad things will have bad things happen to them. Of course, we all know life doesn’t work that way. We see in the news all the time about hard working individuals losing their retirement fund do to some financial crash while the ones who caused it get bonuses and become even richer.
Now, you can react to life’s unfairness by complaining about it, being depressed about it, or realizing that this is just how it is and continue to work hard toward the things you want anyway.
Working hard won’t guarantee you’ll get anywhere in life. A lot of things outside of your control can happen that can either stop you from getting what you want or take away the things you already have. Then there are cases where people who are lazy end up striking rich due to luck/coincidence, it happens. Just don’t expect life to be fair and you’ll save yourself from a lot of mental anguish.
Increase the Odds
Since there aren’t really guarantees to anything, what’s the point of working hard in the first place? The point is although you still might not obtain the life you want, you’ll have a better chance of having what you want when you put in the work compared to just giving up and spend your days complaining about your situation.
It’s really a mental thing. The odds of becoming a professional athlete is extremely small, yet, plenty of people go after that dream anyway because not trying gives them a lower chance of making it than trying.
It’s Not What Happens, It’s What You Do About It
You may be at a point in life where you feel like the whole world is against you, that there’s some conspiracy to ensure you live a mediocre life. Bad things seem to keep happening to you while good things seem to happen to people you know who don’t even deserve it. Maybe they do drugs or beat their kids and yet, still get ahead in life somehow while you, an honest, good, hard working citizen are constantly struggling.
This may or may not help but whatever it is you’re going through, realize that tons of people are going through the same thing or much worse. Life isn’t out to get you. All that bad stuff… those things happen either because you did something to cause it to happen or it’s just by coincidence.
You could use all the bad things that happen to you in life to become bitter and not even attempt to reach your goals or even have goals for that matter and you’d probably have people who understand where you’re coming from and won’t even criticize you for doing so. You could do that, or, you could realize being bitter will do nothing to improve your circumstances and in order for your life to get better, you have to keep pursuing a better life.
Accept the fact that life can sometimes be a pain and that bad things happen and will continue to happen no matter how good of a person you are. If you’re going to accept that fact then you have to also accept that good things will happen as well.
So you can continue to work hard toward your dreams and know that there’s a chance things aren’t going to work out or you can just give up because you believe life isn’t fair anyway and it’ll somehow ruin everything for you no matter how hard you work.
Just know that good, hard working people are more likely to have good things happen to them than bad, lazy people. So don’t use the excuse of life being unfair to stop trying to reach your fullest potential.
Life being unfair is already a given so learn to deal with this fact instead of letting it cause you to become bitter and waste your life away.
