How much are you willing to lose in order to have the life you want? What sacrifices are you prepared to make to reach your dreams?
These are important questions to think about before deciding to pursue a worthy, long-term goal. When you decide to take a new set of actions, it means you’ll be investing your time differently. This means that whatever you were spending your time on before, that time has to be decreased.
For some, this could mean less browsing on the internet or watching TV. For others, it could mean less time with their family or engaging in their hobbies.
Whatever sacrifices you need to make in order to achieve your dreams, you need to decide whether or not you’ll be okay with it before you start or you may find yourself miserable later on.
There are plenty of people who put their career ahead of everything and although they might have made a lot of money, they never had time for their family and friends and ended up being depressed while turning to things like alcohol to help deal with their situation. Although this is an extreme example, it happens far more often than most people think.
Is what you’re pursuing worth it?
If you want to really excel in one area, you’re going to have to make sacrifices in other areas. Finding a balance is ideal but is very difficult to achieve due to the limited amount of time that we have. So what are you willing to give up and is it worth it?
Try to project your life a few years into the future and see how life would be like to pursue your dreams. Would you be happy? Would the people you love be happy? Would you regret anything? What kind of person would you become and would you be okay with that?
For most goals, making the sacrifices is a no-brainer especially if what you’re sacrificing is just time wasting activities. For some goals however, you really need to think about what you might be giving up.
Perhaps you want to get fit and therefore would have to give up all of your favorite foods. Maybe you want to own a house but it would require you to move to another, cheaper city, while leaving your friends and family. Or maybe you want to spend more time with your family and that would mean not putting in as much hours into your career.
Regardless of what sacrifices you have to make to make your dreams a reality, you need to be okay with it because things are very likely going to get tough. There will be days where you’ll question why you’re even pursuing your goal and doubt your decision to get on the path in the first place.
When the alarm goes off early in the morning to get your daily exercise in and all you want to do is sleep, you have to remind yourself that sacrificing some sleep was your idea, something you accepted.
Those who start on a goal and end up quitting due to the lack of action are those who failed to accept the price. Don’t make a big commitment until you know what it’s going to cost you. Examine the cost first and only after you’re okay with it should you move forward with the commitment.
Sacrifice is part of the success formula. Think about all of the people who are masters at their craft and how much time they must have invested to get to where they are. Now think about the sacrifices they had to make, the things they missed out on in order to have a shot at their dreams.
Not everyone who achieves their dream is happy. For some, the sacrifices they made were far too great.
Hopefully, you understand that deciding to make the sacrifice for your dream life isn’t a decision to be taken lightly and the bigger your dreams and the more time it will take from you, the bigger the impact the decision will make on your life.
Now if you’ve been wasting a lot of time on time wasting activities that you know are doing you no good, make the sacrifice. When you realize how much you can get done, what you can accomplish, and how much knowledge and skills you can pick up, you’ll wish you had started sooner.
The bottom line is to know the price you’re going to have to pay. If you’re okay with it, move forward. If not, choose a different goal.
“You can have anything you want if you’re willing to sacrifice everything you have. Nothing goes without a price, so before you get in the battle, decide how much you are willing to lose.” – Unknown
