What if the people who are the best at what they do are only the best because not enough people tried being the best at that particular skill? Think about how many kids who could’ve been a child prodigy at something such as the piano but because they were never exposed to the instrument, they never had the chance to develop their greatness?
What if the best musicians, athletes, artists, programmers, etc., just happened to have been exposed to one of the things they were bound to excel at? What if there are people out there who would’ve been the best at something had they had the chance to practice the skill? What if there are people out there who would’ve been the best at some sport that hasn’t even been invented yet?
Talent is Overrated
Most people think talent is the most important thing to have to become great at something and that when you have talent, you easily become great. This is hardly the case. Sure, the people who are the best at what they do probably have a great deal of talent but for most of them, it was hard work and persistence that got them to where they are.
Just imagine how many people who were actually exposed to a skill they would’ve been great at but gave up after the first initial setback. Almost all of us have a list of things we tried in the past and ended up giving up on. What if we actually stuck to a few of those things… how great would we have become?
You Can Be Great
The point of all of this is to let you know that you’re not just some average human being taking up space on this planet. You possess the ability to be more than just another face in the crowd.
So how do you know what you could be great at? This is the million dollar question. The best way to find out is to try a bunch of different things to see what you natural excel at. If you don’t have the luxury of doing that, then look at the things you love doing in your spare time. People who are the best at what they do almost always love what they do.
You could practice at something you hate and still become good but to be outstanding at it, you need to love it, otherwise, what would be the point in being great at it?
If you find that the only things you really love doing are things like sleeping, then expand your horizon. Try different activities. Learn something new. You never know, the next activity you try could be something you’ll fall in love with and end up doing for the rest of your life.
So for those of you who don’t think you’ve got greatness inside of you, just know that you do but you just haven’t discovered it yet. Keep looking and when you find something you love, get good at it… no, become great at it. You don’t have to strive to be the best but strive to be great. The reason is, when you’re great at something, you’ll tend to develop the belief and confidence that you could become good at a lot of other things if you just put your mind to it.
Spend Your Time Wisely
Imagine the average human life span is 1,000 years. What can skills can you master in 1,000 years? Now imagine wasting that entire thousand years and end up just being another average human being with no noticeable skill or talent. Don’t waste your time. Use it to become great at something you love doing.
Who knows, maybe your greatness can inspire someone else, perhaps your kids, and put them on a path that will lead to them being the best in the world at something.
